Is facade renovation compulsory in Lyon?

Many owners find out when a letter from the town hall arrives: yes, facade renovation can be a legal obligation in France. The construction code requires facades to be kept in a good state of repair, and some municipalities enforce periodic renovation.
In Paris the ten-year rule is famous. In Lyon there is no systematic ten-year obligation, but the city can serve a renovation order on the owner of a degraded facade. Ignoring it exposes you to a fine and, in some cases, to works carried out at your expense.
Anticipate rather than endure
The right approach is not to wait for the letter. A facade should be monitored: widening cracks, render that sounds hollow, black pollution marks, moss on the north side. A free assessment tells you whether a simple clean is enough or a full renovation is needed.
Anticipating also means choosing your season. Renovation is ideally planned in spring or summer, when drying conditions are good and permit lead times shorter.
The paperwork
